Happy Birthday ICK

A year has passed from the opening ceremony of Innovation Centre Kosovo (ICK) which in the past 12 months with full merit has been nicknamed by the media as the “house of Kosovo innovators”. During the first year of its operations Innovation Centre continuously helped 115 members of 26 teams who have gone through the incubator, the centre has organized trainings, events, seminars for Kosovar entrepreneurs. ICK with its activities in Kosovo has managed to bring the modern concept of entrepreneurship that combines business, technology and innovation. ICK within the first year of work has signed 19 cooperation agreements with institutions, companies, universities, various organizations within and outside Kosovo.The first anniversary of the opening of ICK is an opportunity to be informed closely with the 25 unique trainings attended by over 300 people, 30 events organized that were visited by over than 1600 people from different professional backgrounds, and to analyze products and services of 17 teams that are currently part of the ICK’s incubator.

ICK has also developed four useful manual for Kosovar entrepreneurs.”The driving force and central goal behind the centre is the need for creation of future-oriented jobs, especially based on information and communication technology, and to support entrepreneurs in creating successful companies”, said Astrid Green Chairperson of the ICK Board and managing director of Athene Prosjektledelse AS.Green also added that ICK is a base of innovation that provides relevant incubation and business development services, as well as market-oriented and professional training, consulting and modern facilities.Uranik Begu Executive Director Innovation Centre presented the work done during one year from the centre.

“As you know Innovation Centre was established last year in June of 2012 and it is part of the ‘Business Development Program’ that is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway”, Begu said adding that ICK aims to identify businesses based on technology and innovation, which have the potential to evolve. He said the Innovation Centre will continue to support young entrepreneurs and their business ideas based on technology and innovation.His Excellency Ambassador of Norway in Kosovo Jan Braathu said that he feels very happy to be in the ceremony where it is marked the first anniversary of the opening of ICK. “I think this has been a very good year during which time our expectations are met and hope that during this year reached your expectations for this innovation center has nothing to do with Norway, has nothing to do with the Ministry of Norway’s Foreign but has to do with Kosovo, giving help companies “, said Braathu adding that” Our vision for the center is that the center should be based not only on Kosovo or just for Norway but we want this to be a European center where there will be cooperation at European level in the IT sector.While Vjollca Çavolli executive director of Kosovo Association of Information and Communication Technology (STIKK) said that she is very pleased and happy that the state of Norway is helping young entrepreneurs from Kosovo.Athene Prosjektledelse, Norway and Kosovo Association of Information and Communication Technology (STIKK), Kosovo are the founders of ICK, and Crimson Capital LLC, Kosovo is the main cooperating partner. ICK is funded by The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Round Table on Scaled VAT

STIKK office was held roundtable on Scaled VAT, in which is discussed the draft document for possible escalation of VAT for ICT products.

This paper captured the key aspects of VAT scale for ICT industry in particular and its positive effects for the Kosovo society and internal growth generation, mainly in job creation and tax contributions. It includes as well, a Regional Best Practice review from countries of Western Balkans, and review of EU VAT system and Kosovo’s VAT legislation and possibilities for eventual scale for ICT industry

STIKK met with parliamentary committee

STIKK met with parliamentary committee to discuss the law on monitoring of imports. Besides law we also discussed the ICT market in general as well as barriers that have companies that operate in this sector. Present in this committee were Mrs. Teuta Sahatciu, Mr. Shaip Muja, Lutfi Zharku and representatives from NGOs. STIKK informed the MP’s about how the ICT market is stable and growing market and how the value of this sector will go up to EUR 160m in 2016based on IDCAdriatics.

STIKK informed members of parliament about initiatives in the region that their governments have taken to increased imports of ICT equipment, like exempting from taxes and how this has affected our market.

MP’s was also briefed on the activities of the association and the association’s strategic plans.

STIKK invite MPs to help the sector to by voting laws that ease of doing business in this sector.

EU Perspective in Kosovo

From 24th of June, STIKK took part in the three-day training that has to do with the EU and how the collaboration between actors of Kosovo should be towards European integration.

The training aimed to provide knowledge on two important issues of European integration and the techniques and tools for effective communication of information to a wider audience. The training was designed for society actors such as European integration officers in the central and local level, spokesperson, media and civil society organizations which play an important role in stimulating debate about EU issues in the country and informing the general public about the EU in Kosovo.

In the end of the three-day training certificates were distributed to participants.

e-Gov in Kosovo Municipalities

STIKK took part in the conference organized by KS Kosova in cooperation with the Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities. The main topics of the conference were: Relevance of local e-Government – Growth, Benefits and prospects for the future, e-Governance in Kosovo Municipalities, and Local Digital Agenda.

During the conference it’s been discussed about the document which was prepared in the form of guidance for municipalities of the Republic of Kosovo in order to encourage the readiness of municipalities for the implementation of electronic services. On the other hand, Local Digital Agenda is a guiding document for local government, which enables the advancement and modernization of processes and administrative services in the municipality.

Meeting of the Working Sub-Group on Services

STIKK together with representatives of the Government of Kosovo, business community and business associations participated in the fourth meeting of the Working Sub-group on Services in Ministry of Trade and Industry, as part of the Trade Policy. In this meeting they discussed different issues such as CEFTA Negotiations on Services, The negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement with Turkey, and various issues on service sector.

During the meeting, participants raised some concerns that belong to the field of IT sector:
-Activity Code in ARBK which is considered to be a continues barrier, and
-Scaled VAT on services, in particular for the IT sector.

In this case Mrs. Vjollca Cavolli asked for a better cooperation between the associations, businesses and institutions to address these issues, as well as much better exchange of information in order to have positive move in this direction.
